Mohinder, he's realized over the course of their conversation, looks tired. He can't say he blames him, figures that three fractured ribs and a handful of cuts and bruises would do that to anyone, but it's just a revelation he's had. And the one that comes to him immediately afterwards is that he should let Suresh sleep, but he doesn't want to go. He's enjoying their conversation too much, for starters, and even beyond that, there's one question that's been burning in his mind since he came in, earlier.
"Still think you can save me?"
Suresh just looks at him for a moment, casually knowing. "I don't think that's up to me." And when all he can do is quirk his eyebrows at the geneticist, he clarifies, "I can say whatever I want, but you need to listen first, don't you?"
He still doesn't understand, though, and he pulls back from where he's been leaning at the Indian's bedside to look at him, bewildered. The distance he's put between them doesn't seem to make what he's saying any clearer, however, and so he asks, "You think I don't listen?"
"I didn't say that." Mohinder shakes his head, or tries, anyway. Pain makes him stop, makes him bite back a wince, and when it passes, he makes mental note not to try that again before continuing. "I said it was your choice, not mine."
He offers the other man a noise that he hopes passes for noncomittal. "I'm not sure there's much left to save, Mohinder."
And again, Suresh gets that knowing look he still hasn't decided whether he hates or lives for. "I'm not so sure about that, but I'm not going to press you."
Silence falls between them for a moment, as he turns that over in his head, Mohinder's eyes still on him. He doesn't understand. He's killed so many people and Mohinder knows it - has been victim to it, Chandra more than half a year gone now - and the geneticist still thinks he can be saved. He doesn't understand, but he needs to, and so he starts, "Can I just ... ask you something?"
"Of course."
"You sound so sure," he starts, tone one of wonder. "How can you be?"
Suresh smiles. "Faith."
"In what?"
"In you." In five years time, when Sylar - Gabriel - looks back on his life, he'll be able to say that two words changed it forever. And all because Mohinder Suresh trusted him.
