"That hunger you've got--it's not about killing, it's about power."

His father has it all wrong. Like so many before him, he doesn't understand--surprising, since if he has Peter's abilities, shouldn't he have the hunger, too?--but it's not unexpected. There are so few people who truly understand the thing that saps his sanity, filling up the void it leaves in its wake with passion and fury and want. A want to know.

The power is nice, he has to admit, a welcome side effect to tide him over after the release that understanding brings, but it's not about that. It's about that want, that taste of knowledge, bittersweet on his lips like a good wine after a meal. It's that drive that his father doesn't understand. And there, standing in the dark of the room his father shuts him in, something metallic hissing in the gloom like a chorus of snakes, there's something else he realizes his father doesn't understand.

The same wine only holds flavor for so long, before it becomes bland. Sweet power becomes cloying. Even knowledge goes stale, the same yellowing pages, the same actions over and over again, grow old and crumble to dust.

So, when the room suddenly lights up, stinking of ozone, he heads further into the room, but not for reasons of power. Not because he wants to open himself to being like his brother, so he can have more. It's because he needs a new methodology, a new way of knowing because the old one just doesn't work anymore. It's never worked; he realizes this now. And the first thing he wants to know?

The first thing he wants to know is what forgiveness tastes like.
