"What did you do?"

Bela jumped, wheeling in her chair to face him, and he couldn't help but smile. It was no real surprise that he'd taken her by surprise -- those things, the Hellhounds if he believed what Ruby had said, would have been enough; the fact that this was the first time he'd made his presence known all day and no one else seemed to be around was just icing on the cake -- but it was still amusing, somehow. She didn't seem to appreciate the joke, however, and flashed him a look that was equal parts sour and guardedly frightened still. "Where the hell have you been?"

Moving to take up a seat in one of the office chairs they'd managed to track down, he gestured over his shoulder back the way he'd came. "There's a storage closet back there. I was poking around in it."

"Weren't your orders to keep an eye on me while the others went after the Colt?"

The amusement bled away from his face abruptly, and he steeled his jaw, trying to avoid the urge to make her pay for that remark on principle alone. He didn't take orders. Not anymore. After a moment and thankfully, however, he managed to rationalize that she didn't know that, and he managed to quell the urge with a shake of his head. Still, though, he pointed out, "I don't take orders. This is just me paying a debt."

She looked away, studying the imperfections in the cement of the floor. "Fair enough, I suppose."

They sat in silence for a moment, and then he asked again. "So, what did you do?"

"I assume you're talking about the Hellhounds?" He nodded and she sighed, curling in on herself a bit as if she expected them to suddenly show up now that they'd been mentioned. Based on all the strange things Sylar had seen in the last few days, he wouldn't have been surprised, but the lights did not flicker nor could he hear anything nosing around the shop no matter how hard he strained, and so he dismissed the thought. He contented himself to watching her, curious and waiting, and she chanced a glance up before looking away again. "I made a deal."

"With who?"

"I'm sure you've heard someone say they'd sell their soul for something? Of course they didn't mean it, but in the right place at the right time, there are people -- demons -- who would be more than willing to take you up on that offer."

He looked less dubious than he would have a few weeks ago; he still wasn't sure he believed in God and the Devil, but demons he'd seen first-hand. "How does that work?"

Raising her eyes to him again, she flashed him a dark look. "Interested in making more trouble for the Winchesters?"

He made a soft, amused noise. "I haven't had a soul to sell in a long time. I'm just curious."

"You'd be surprised, I think -- everyone has a soul," she answered. A pause followed and then, against what Sylar figured what her better judgement, she told him. "It's a bit more complicated than you'd imagine, though. You need to be at a crossroad, for starters, and there's a fair bit of ritual involved to even get them to show up. After that comes the bargaining, and they're generally willing to give you anything you want, as long as you agree to forfeit your soul in ten or so years."

"And they collect using those things."

"Very good." He didn't miss the small, bitter smile that curled his lips. "They tear you to shreds, then drag whatever's left of you down to Hell for an eternity. And if what I've seen of Dean the last few weeks is any indication, that's very much something I'd like to avoid if it wasn't before."

"What do you mean?" he asked, head tilting to one side, curiously.

"It's Hell," she shot back, "I'm sure you can do the math."

He hummed, accepting, and then lapsed into silence, taking a moment to pick apart everything she'd said, mentally. And when he seemed to reach some sort of conclusion, he asked, "Is this the only way out of your deal? Killing this Lilith woman?"

"Seems to be." Bela popped one shoulder in a shrug, her mouth pressing into a thin line. "I've tried a number of other things and, from what I understand, so did the Winchesters, and they had little luck. You can't just kill the demon who you made your deal with, deals on top of deals are no good, and no amount of lowbrow magics can break whatever they're working with. Apparently, you have to cut off the head of the dragon and kill whoever holds your contract, and you can see how difficult that's been."

Nodding, he drummed his fingers on the arm of the chair thoughtfully, once again retreating to his mind to consider what she'd said. He'd just about managed to form another question when she started again, something idle in her tone as if she weren't talking to him so much as to herself. "Though given a few more weeks, I'm not sure how much of what I've said will hold any weight. Lilith's been in charge of any deals made for as long as I've been alive, at least, and I'd be surprised if she hadn't been Hell's go-to girl for much longer than that. And if Sam and Dean manage to kill her ... "

If Sam and Dean managed to kill her, maybe he could get something for free. He wasn't sure what -- it was just a quick, random thought -- but who was he to turn down more power? He was more than happy to keep the idea to himself, however, as it sounded like lunacy even to him, and instead nodded slowly.

"If they manage, you're free. And no one else will have to worry about their contracts."

"I suppose so."

The conversation ended there but the idea that perhaps he could make this work for him did not die so quickly.
