heroslayer: (everything froze into ice)

He'd let her sleep until somewhere nearing nine o'clock the next morning, occupying his own time spent awake thumbing through a book, sure that it was the safest of all of his options. She'd gotten up, surprisingly without complaint, taken a few minutes to get her bearings, then slipped out the door to bring back the breakfast she'd promised him the night before. He wasn't sure why she hadn't asked what he'd wanted, whether she figured they liked the same things or if she'd simply forgotten, but it had amused him just the same.

Returning to the couch, a hint of a smile on his face, he'd pulled his book back into his lap and waited for her to return. And some twenty minutes later she had, carrying two take-out plates full of surprisingly decent pancakes and a half gallon of ice cream -- for the pancakes, of course. They'd moved into the kitchen and she'd pestered him into telling the rest of his life story as they ate.

Now out of words, or at least things he could talk about without having to edit immensely, the sat in silence as they finished up their breakfast. After a moment, though, he couldn't help but suggest, "Your turn."

"What Dr.Suresh was saying. It's...true?" Crystal's eyes had widened considerably as she leaned forward until she was sitting on the edge of her seat. "That there are others who can do...things, things like I can?"

She looked so hopeful, and there was a twinge of guilt in the pit of Gabriella's stomach that she had to push away. They were there on a mission. Not the one they were making out to be - that the woman seemed so accepting of, but she couldn't help but feel bad, even if it was just a little.

"Uh, yes, ma'am. And quite a wide variety, too. But, we're here to talk to you about yours, for right now. When did you first discover it?"

Gabriella shot him a glare from across the room at the way he was smiling, before letting a much more pleasant one appear on her own.

"Poof? What exactly went poof? The cat, or the piece of furniture."

She was trying to keep her conversation light as she took a sip of her coffee.

"The cat!" Crystal exclaimed, her hands waving a bit now, though as nothing said poof, Gabriella assumed that she must have gained some sort of control over it since she had gotten it. "Of course of course!" She got up then, and collected one of the angels he had been looking at earlier. Holding it in the palm of one hand, she waved the other in front of it, and it was gone. A smile, and another wave, and it was back in her hand as though it had never left. "Poof."

"...poof indeed."

"So soon?" Crystal looked concerned as she moved to join them again, the statue clutched in her hand as she sat on the edge of her seat. "Is there...do you know if anyone else can do that?"

"Oh, oh no, ma'am it's nothing to worry about. We just...don't want to exhaust you," she said quickly and sipped her coffee. "It must be draining, that. And...yes. Noah. And now?"

Gabriella flinched slightly at the sight, and then adverted her gaze to the cat that had hopped into her lap as she took another sip of her coffee. This was the way things were meant to be, and there was no point in trying to stop it now.

She did however cringe at the woman's cries for help from her, but she didn't look at her a single time.
